Static: Information and History
Static has been around and gaming together as a guild and a community since November 2002. Beginning as a guild in Earth & Beyond (E&B), EA's now-defunct Space/Sci-fi MMORPG, Static has grown, expanded, and moved on to become a multi-game community with members active in City of Heroes, EVE, Everquest 2, Lineage 2, The Matrix Online, and most notably of late, World of Warcraft. Static members also game together outside of MMOs, with members playing together competitively in Counterstrike: Source and other competitive team-based online games, and even occasionally sitting down for a virtual game of Texas Hold'em Poker. What began as one elite guild has grown into its own community of gamers and friends.
Earth & Beyond
Static's inception was in November of 2002 in on the Andromeda server of Earth & Beyond, when Magi Warriors and Top Wolf merged together into a new guild, named Static. Static was initially "the little guild that could," tackling challenges well beyond what conventional wisdom said they were capable of and coming out victorious. This tendency to simply get things done soon earned Static a reputation of being an "uber guild," and along with that respect, jealousy, and in some cases even hatred for simply being good at playing the game and achieving things that larger guild with far greater numbers of players failed at.
Static's demonstrated ability to achieve is the direct result of many core values and beliefs of the guild that were formed in Earth & Beyond, and are present today. These include a preference for Quality of players over Quantity - taking in a small, crack team of players to achieve something with skill, intelligence, dedication, and creativity rather than just massing a large number of characters and "zerging" a challenge (not that we don't enjoy a good thorough overkill now and then, another Static Tradition); Dedication, with a problem solving approach to challenges (one of the previous Static guild mottos was "Static: If it bleeds, we've killed it. If it doesn't bleed, we've found a way to kill it anyway."); and devotion to the concept of the guild as an entity and to taking care of your fellow guildmates, including the "give to the guild, and you'll get from the guild" ideal to encourage players to look beyond selfishness and personal in-game gain for the overall betterment of the guild, confident in the knowledge that making the guild stronger makes the individual player stronger and that contributions and selfless acts are ultimately in a player's own best interests. In short, Static was (and is) an elite guild whose members look out for each other, don't shy away from daunting challenges, and strive to be good and effective players in whatever they do.
Static in Earth & Beyond did have some dark points, though. No lasting guild is without its occasional problems or drama. For the first several months of the guild, it seemed almost as if it was a guild tradition for the guild leader to get "ubered up" with the best equipment the game had to offer, then "retire" (often just opening another account and starting over) to sell their wondrously equipped character on eBay. This came to a halt when Utena was elected Guild Leader, and policies to redefine the guild and excise selfishness and profiteering off of guildmates were instituted. The focus of the guild was turned towards internal development, making Static players and their characters as strong and skillful as possible, resulting in a guild nearly entirely self-sufficient, with a low attrition rate, exacting standards, and a fierce sense of pride.
Static became the guild that everyone wanted to be in, envied and resented, or at least strongly respected, accomplishing more than other guilds with 5 to 10 times our number of active players. Eventually, Static attracted more and more skilled players from numerous guilds (including players who transferred from other servers to be a part of Static), drawn to Static's values, accomplishments, and the fact that we look out for and take care of our own. Whether responding to a call for help from a guild member getting kill-stolen in Antares or Cooper (with a strong force of Static members swooping in to join the harassed Static member and display dominance through both gear and skill, content with the knowledge that others had to try to prove something by taking on a Static member), or tackling an epic "raid" encounter, Static was a name known over all of "An-drama-duh." Static set the bar, Static was the standard others aspired to, and Static made difficult things LOOK easy.
Some of Static's notable accomplishments in Earth & Beyond include:
- First to defeat the Drone Controller epic, a feat that wasn't replicated by anyone on ANY server for over a month
- First guild to defeat the ever-changing Tada-O Gate raid event on 3 seperate iterations
- One of the first guilds to defeat the Voltoi Ascendant event
- Part of the tri-guild collaboration that resulted in the first successful completion of the "Fishbowl" epic raid event (which we went on to destroy numerous time as a guild-only event)
Beyond E&B
All good things eventually come to an end, and so eventually did Earth & Beyond. Due to EA's mismanagement and almost zero effort in marketing the game, its imminent shutdown (the "Sunset") was announced. Static stayed strong and active in Earth & Beyond through to the end, though many broken-hearted members began looking for a new game to enjoy, and to recapture the Static Spirit in. Static changed and grew, shifting from a guild based in one game, to a multi-game community of friends and gamers. Some gave Lineage II a try, some played (and still play) City of Heroes, and many Static members migrated to EVE for a while, seeking another space-themed MMO to slake their yearning for our beloved E&B. Then, World of Warcraft came to be, and has rekindled Static in a way no other single game since E&B's sunset has been able to do.
World of Warcraft
Static's primary game of choice now is Blizard Entertainment's World of Warcraft. Despite being the overplayed "Fantasy" MMO genre, the game is just a lot of fun, and has captured the attention and interest of the largest portion of Static of any game since E&B's demise. Static plays on the Blackhand server, and has both Alliance and Horde chapters (Static Alliance and Static Horde, respectively). Though this split of Static's player base initially hurt both guild chapters somewhat, Static has recovered and grown, with both guilds thriving, growing slowly (choosing again to recruit Quality over Quantity) and becoming more formidable every day. Static, if not unique, is unusual in being able to offer players both Alliance and Horde guilds to play in, with the same goals, values, and methods, active leadership, and good communication in both chapters. Whether Horde or Alliance, you can count on finding Static people online to play with and talk to, with daily instance runs and/or raids.
Static has this web site, with an active and helpful members-only section of the forums that includes helpful and useful information in the Guild Reference Rooms, its own dedicated, professionally hosted TeamSpeak voice communications server, and a lot of great people who care about each other, excel at playing the game, and like to have fun and accomplish things.
